Ottawa Beach General Store

Ottawa Beach General Store

The Story

Buist Sheet Metal fabricated and installed 4,000 square feet of traditional double locked standing seam metal roof, providing protection from the elements for the second 85 years of this Holland icon. The rebuilt Ottawa Beach General Store mimics the historic building that was replaced and features clean lines across hips and slope changes.

Materials Used

  • Standing Seam Panels in Cityscape Color
  • S-5! ColorGard Snowguards
  • 6” Style-K Gutters with 3” x 4” Downspouts

What We Delivered

Buist Sheet Metal was excited to provide the new 24 gauge prefinished steel metal roofing on the iconic Ottawa Beach General Store. The project schedule was tight as the historic building was emptied and demolished after Labor Day 2023 and the new building opened at noon on Friday of Memorial Day weekend 2024. We began installing ice and water shield roof underlayment on January 2 but had to coordinate with other trades before we could begin installing metal.

To minimize work over the finished roof, we installed slope transition flashings at the change from the lower 2:12 slope roof to the 4:12 roof and then installed all the upper roof panels and hip and ridge caps before installing the lower roof panels and snowguards.

The site fencing was tight around the perimeter of the building but access was especially difficult on the back side of the roof. Our roof panel layout around the mechanical pits along with the ridge transitioning from standing seam to membrane roof and back to standing seam in multiple locations took additional planning.

The Difference is in the Details

Buist Sheet Metal put extra care into many details including custom skylight flashings to match the metal roofing, cladding the galvanized steel mechanical curbs with metal to match the metal roofing for the best “curb appeal”, and an integral kick-out flashing that, while hidden from the ground, will help divert water into the gutter.

The signage from the old building was removed and saved to be reinstalled on the new building. The old signs had just been screwed down through the old roofing, and we made it clear to First Companies that we did NOT want anyone punching holes in our brand new roof! We developed a custom mounting system utilizing S-5! utility seam clamps mounted to the standing seams (like the snowguards) and fabricated 1/8” clear anodized aluminum rails to attach to the utility clamps. This allowed the signs could be moved side to side along the length of the building to the desired locations and then we bolted the signs down to the aluminum rails. It’s the first time in our company’s history that we volunteered to be a sign company as well!
